Holistic Remedies for Immunity

Yesterday I woke up at 5AM with a raging sore throat. The kind where it hurts to swallow, and you see the next 3 days ahead of you filled with misery. I knew I had to avoid this outcome at all costs. Who wants to be sick when its 70 degrees and sunny for the rest of the week? Not me. In the past, I would have just taken over the counter cold medicine and headed off to work. Instead, I took the holistic route. Here is how I combat sickness, the natural way.

1. Gargle salt water

This is the best way to kill the bacteria that has taken up residence in your throat. I mix a teaspoon of whatever salt I have lying around with about 6oz of water.


2. Take a shot of apple cider vinegar.

Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties and probiotics! No need to elaborate.


3. Take a shot of elderberry syrup.

Elderberry syrup is my go to when I have a sore throat or feel myself getting sick. Its great for immunity and is soothing to your throat.

4. Make yourself a cup of tea.

The heat of tea alone is soothing when you are sick. The type of tea you choose also adds to your benefit. I always go for echinacea when I am sick for its immune support properties.


5. Local honey.

This adds on to the tea point, load up the honey intake! I not only add it to my tea, but also take a spoonful. It has antibacterial properties and is loaded with antioxidants. If you are able, always opt for local honey. It contains 4 times the amount of antioxidants than processed honey. Not to mention, processed honey often contains micro-plastics. Local honey also aids in seasonal allergies specific to your area! Nature is amazing.


6. Goldenseal.

Goldenseal is a natural antibiotic, and its the real deal. I always get it in a powder form. It's yellow and has a very strong earthy taste. I add mine to a smoothie, about a teaspoon, to mask the flavor. Putting it in a fruit smoothie is a two in one because you are also providing your body with vitamin C. Your body doesn't store vitamin C, so it is really important that you consume it everyday, especially when you are sick. I helps your body over come sickness faster!

Note: Only take goldenseal when you really need it, if you take it too frequently your body will build a tolerance to its healing properties. Every few months is best!


7. Hydrate.

Your body needs water to perform at its best!


I did everything on this list yesterday. By the time I took my lunch break, my sore throat was gone. Not only that, but it never returned and my cold symptoms never progressed. I am free to enjoy the beautiful spring weather! I know from experience that drug store cold medicine can't do that for me. Next time you are feeling under the weather, try some of these holistic remedies, you won't regret it!
